Derek Popke

Derek Popke is the owner of the Vancouver Hockey School Ltd. and the island's Victoria Hockey School Ltd., two of the most respected hockey schools in Western Canada. In addition, he is the skating coach for the 2007-08 BCHL Junior "A" Champion Penticton Vees and most recently worked  on-ice with the ECHL Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliates of the AHL Manitoba Moose and NHL Vancouver Canucks. Over the past year, players and prospects from organizations such as the Boston Bruins, NY Islanders, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Redwings, NY Rangers, Dallas Stars, and Chicago Blackhawks have advanced their skating under his direction.  

Derek has spent more than 4 years in the business of athlete representation for NHL Player Agency RWG Sport Management (clients include Dan Hamhuis - Nashville Predators, Duncan Kieth - Chicago Blackhawks, David Jones - Colorado Avalanche). As an advisor, skating coach and consultant, his responsibilities include the recruitment, career development and NHL draft preparation of the firms amateur and professional clientele. On behalf of the firm, Derek has negotiated professional player contracts in both North America and Europe. Derek is a regular attendee at the NHL Entry Draft working with top prospects throughout Western Canada including Boston Bruins 2008 1st Rd pick Zach Hamill and 2009 NHL 1st Rd pick Kyle Beach.

Derek continues to consult with professional strength and conditioning coaches and exercise physiologist in order to provide each player the most up-to-date and in depth scientific analysis of hockey skating. His educated and firm understanding of skating, speed and agility, stride mechanics and technique allows him to analyze, critique and advance a players skating efficiency while improving their overall hockey skills.

Dave Nonis

Dave Nonis is currently the Senior Hockey Consultant for the Anaheim Ducks. Nonis spent 3 years as the Vice President and General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks. Nonis became the ninth General Manager in Vancouver Canuck history on May 6th 2004 when he was promoted from Senior Vice President, Director of Hockey Operations.
During his six seasons as Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations, he was responsible for negotiating player contracts, overseeing Vancouver's AHL affiliate -  the Manitoba Moose - and directed all areas of the hockey operations department.

Over the past 7 season, Nonis has been instrumental in leading the negotiations of a number of long-term deals for current Canuck players including Markus Naslund and the Sedin twins. In 2006, Nonis conducted one of the most memorable trades in Canuck history when he traded for All-Star goalie Roberto Luongo. In 2007, he was voted Executive of the Year by the Hockey News for his work during the 2006-07 season. Prior to his duties with the Canucks, he was the Manager of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League.

Nonis is a former defenseman with the University of Maine Black Bears. During his career at Maine, he captained the team to 2 NCAA Collegiate National Championships. After his college career, Nonis played pro hockey in Europe before returning to the University of Maine to complete his MBA in 1990.

Lending his experience to local minor hockey players, Nonis has helped coach the 1995 Junior Giants Spring Hockey team and is currently the Assistant Coach with the South Delta Minor Hockey PeeWee AAA team. He also participates in a variety of charity events throughout Vancouver. This will mark Nonis' third summer at Vancouver Hockey School.

Mark Morrison

Mark Morrison is currently the Head Coach and GM of the Victoria Salmon Kings
- ECHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks. Morrison's daily duties include coaching, negotiating player contracts and developing players under contract to the Salmon Kings affiliates, the Manitoba Moose and Vancouver Canucks. He joins the Salmon Kings after 12 years as the Head Coach/GM of the British National League, Fife Flyers. Recognized as one of the top Pro Leagues in Europe, Coach Morrison was a 3- time recipient of both the leagues Player and Coach of the Year Awards. Most recently capturing the award in the 2003/04 season.

Morrison started his playing career with the WHL Victoria Cougars. Alongside NHL stars Grant Fuhr and Russ and Geoff Courtnall, Coach Morrison amassed a point total record of 394pts in 191gms. This record not only stands today but led Coach Morrison to be drafted 51st overall by the NHL's New York Rangers.


Capturing a gold medal for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1982/83 playing alongside the likes of Steve Yzerman and Dave Andreychuk, he was awarded the tournaments co-MVP. He shared this award alongside team-mate and NHL legend Mario Lemieux. At the age of 19, he recorded his first NHL goal at Madison Square Gardens against the Chicago Blackhawks. Coach Morrison went on to play 3 years internationally for the Canadian Olympic Team and 15 years professionally in Europe. Morrison retired from playing in 2005. He was most recently featured in Steve Yzerman's 2006 book - The Building of a Champion.

Not only an accomplished coach but a great teacher, Coach Morrison continues to lend his coaching skills to Vancouver Hockey's Summer Programs.

Garth Butcher


Garth Butcher is currently the Director of Hockey Operations for the Bellingham Sportsplex. A scrappy defenseman and solid team leader, Coach Butcher played 900 NHL games in the 1980's and 90's. Although his scoring statistics were formidable in junior (WHL Regina Pats), he focused on looking after his own end making the opposition forwards pay the price in the NHL.  His blend of talent and grit made him one of the top prospects in the 1981 NHL Draft.  He was claimed in the first Rd., 10th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks. Coach Butcher went on the play nearly a decade with the Canucks.

In the NHL, Coach Butcher became a constant physical presence in his own end. He became known as a team leader and one of the craftiest defenseman in the Western Conference. Late in the 1990-91 season he was traded to the St. Louis Blues where he would serve as team captain. Highlights of this stage of his career included playing for Canada at the World Hockey Championships and helping the Blues become come within a game of reaching the semi-finals in 1993. Coach Butcher played briefly with the Quebec Nordiques and Toronto Maple Leafs before retiring in 1995.

Coach Butcher owns and operates a variety of business throughout the Vancouver and Toronto area.  During his spare time he serves as Asst. Coach to the 1995 Jr. Giants Spring Hockey Team. In addition to helping minor hockey players, he frequently attends University of Northern Michigan hockey games where his son Matt is a forward. Matt is a draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks and is in his sophomore season with the Wildcats.
